We’ve been purchasing a lot of Cold Steels recently. Truth be told, we should’ve been working on our Cold Steel collection for some time now, but I feel like we usually obsess over one brand for a while, then once we’ve gotten a good chunk of the knives we want from that brand, we finally begin to move on to another one. Seems to be what we did with Spydercos!
My favourites of these are the Recon 1 and the SRK. Already have the review for the Recon 1 up, and all the rest will be coming soon!

HAS ANYBODY HEARD OR SEEN OF A MINI COLDSTEEL TANTO W/SAN MAI FROM VENTURA CALIF.KEYCHAIN VERSION WITH 1 3/4 ” SINGLE LOCK BACK BLADE AND IT’S WORTH ?
I seem to remember them being around in 2000’ish? I would suggest creating a thread on bladeforums.com and see what the collectibility is.
Have you done a review of the SRK? I’m looking at getting one, or the Master Hunter.
Which steel is your SRK, and a couple of years on, any recommendations of type of steel, there is 3 I think.
Cheers, Damo
Haven’t done it yet Damian, check out this article;

Where I touch on the topic. My SRK is Aus-8 and frankly all the steels used are tough as nails, especially with the grinds on that knife. Given the choice I would go with the Carbon Steel (3V) version, the reason being that I live in a dry enviroment and thus corrosion just isn’t an issue for me and 3V is possibly the toughest steel you can buy with decent edge holding.
Hi,I’m Chris and I’m a absolute knife fanatic.
I carry a Emerson cqc7 with the wave feature plainedge and a Coldsteel mini recon Tanto in Aus8a steel.
I have to say both knives are EXCELLENT for edc.
You have to try the Coldsteel mini Recon…its superb and weighs only 3ounces.
You can even make it your go to knife for excersize when you go running or bike riding.
It has the same build quality as the big Coldsteel Recon 1.
Just in a smaller more agile version.
Tough and built to last…
Thanks for your experiences Christian, If I see the mini recon for a good price I might snap one up but as I own its full sized brother I don’t feel the *need* to get one. With that said, knowing me I will probably get one anyway- needs be damned!
They’re good stuff.
I’ve had an SRK for the past 10 years. It is by far one of the best fixed blade knives for camping.
Also, I own two Voyagers (Large and XL). The large is a very good EDC knife.
My Pocket Bushman is another cool folder I bought a few years ago on a whim. Inexpensive, but a very nice blade. Locks open like it’s a fixed blade. Because of the odd blade lock, I seem to always pinch my hand closing it. Overall a very rugged folder, something good for camping as well.
The Pocket Bushman is a little tricky for me to close. I’m a klutz to begin with, so I have to be very careful or else I just know I’m going to end up regretting closing it myself! But yes, definitely bang-for-buck, very good value! (If you’re not as terrible at closing it as I am, of course! :) ).
The SRK is a great knife. I have one in the Carbon V steel. I’ve carried since 1988. It’s been all over the world a few times and tested in combat. I’ve used for everything from opening MREs to breaking car windows and breaching doors. A mortal person cannot destroy it. I also have a Magnum Tanto in the San Mia steel, that has been with me just as long. It wasn’t my work knife, it was for other purposes. I have a XL voyager. It is crazy big for a lock blade. I actually cleared out a small grove of trees and brush with it. Some of the trees we’re an inch to two inches in diameter. My favorite, is the Kobun Tanto. It’s light, scary sharp ( as all cold steel knives are) and fast. Makes for great snap cuts.
You can never go wrong with Cold Steel.
The Kobun Tanto looks awesome – was already on our wishlist. Just added the Voyager to the wishlist now, thanks to your recommendation!
Love hearing positive testimonials like this. It’s nice to know second hand which knives have really delivered – helps with choosing what to buy next as well, that’s for sure!
